The Blount County
Juvenile Detention
Center has been a division of the
Blount County Sheriff’s Office since July 1, 2001. It is
one of the few Juvenile Detention Centers in the State of Tennessee
that is operated by a Sheriff’s Office.
The Juvenile Detention
Center is a hardware secure
facility designed to provide a short term placement for persons under the
control of the Juvenile Court System. This
facility is designed to house children who are: 1) in need of legal temporary
placement; 2) pending adjudication; 3) awaiting disposition and/or
placement. The maximum holding capacity
is 30. The Detention
Center is available on a per diem
fee for services to nearby county, state and federal law enforcement
agencies. The Detention
Center was first certified by the
Department of Children Services for occupation and operation in October,
2001. It has been annually inspected and
certified every year since.
Our mission is to treat the juveniles with the utmost respect, while at the
same time, encouraging positive pro-social behavior and attitudes that instill
a sense of good will, positive self-esteem, and community citizenship
characteristics. We also believe in
serving the local and surrounding communities by providing a secure environment
in which to hold juveniles referred by the appropriate authorities. During the fourth year of operation, by the
Sheriff’s Office (July 1, 2004
through June 30, 2005), we booked
in 952 juveniles into the Detention
Center
or the T.H.R.
The Blount County Sheriff’s Office also runs a three bed non-secure Temporary
Holding Resource Center (THR) designed for the temporary detention of those juveniles
awaiting Court Disposition on unruly or dependent neglect issues. This facility is the old
Juvenile
Center.
